Hylton Castle

Hylton Castle - case study

We were asked to design a Christmas grotto and an external lighting extravaganza for the lovingly restored and historical landmark that is Hylton Castle.

They created this Christmas event to give the local community and under privileged children a Christmas to remember.

Process and products used

The DZD designed grotto was based around a winter wonderland theme and as such was in keeping with the overall look and feel of the castle.

Flocked trees in varying sizes were dressed with beautiful warm white lights, robins and warm copper coloured baubles.

Through the centre of the grotto a lake was created using pastel blue lights and snow which was surrounded by lots of woodland animals, foliage and gorgeous paper snowflakes hanging from the canopy.

We then created a fun area where the children would meet Father Christmas – trees and garlands were dressed with candy stripe sweets along with traditional red and green decorations, with Christmas elves and animals throughout. Even the suit of armour was wearing a Christmas hat.

The large outdoor lighting event was themed around a castle of a million lights with a beautiful lit tunnel to walk through into the gardens and the start of the light trail.

We supplied knights, treasure chests and lots of twinkly trees to give the children something special for Christmas.

The Christmas event was a sell-out success for Hylton Castle which resulted in them adding extra dates and receiving lots of positive publicity.

They are looking forward to creating something even bigger and better for Christmas 2024.
