How DZD Helped Bring The Loch Ness Monster To Life

Brief

One year ago, a striking new Loch Ness Monster sculpture was unveiled at The Loch Ness Experience. The steel sculpture was designed not only as a new visitor attraction, but as an interactive way for guests to share their own verdict on one of Scotland’s greatest mysteries.

At the end of the tour, visitors would be invited to tie a coloured ribbon to the sculpture, using their chosen colour to show whether they believed in Nessie, thought her existence was possible or remained unconvinced.

The product also needed strong environmental credentials suited to a long-term visitor installation.

Process and Products Used

The Loch Ness Experience selected DZD’s sustainable satin acetate ribbon, with bespoke shades produced in tangerine, gold and electric blue.

As these colours were not part of DZD’s standard stocked range, we worked with our UK-based ribbon manufacturer to arrange a special production order matched to the exact Pantone references required.

A total of 600 rolls were produced, each containing 50 metres of ribbon. The complete order was delivered within seven days, providing the centre with 30,000 metres of ribbon ready for its visitors.

Being able to source bespoke colours at this scale without the extended lead times often associated with specially manufactured products, was an important part of the project.

The ribbon’s environmental credentials were another major consideration.

Made using yarn derived from responsibly sourced wood pulp, the ribbon offers a more sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic ribbon. It has a soft, silky finish, holds its shape when tied and features heat-sealed edges to help prevent fraying.

The yarn carries a range of independent certifications, including:

  • Forest Management Certification (FSC)
  • Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
  • TUV OK Biodegradable certifications for marine, soil and water environments
  • TUV OK Compost certifications for home and industrial composting

Outcome

One year after the sculpture was unveiled, thousands of visitors have added ribbons and shared their verdict on the mystery of Loch Ness. The sculpture has developed into a colourful, evolving installation that gives every visitor the opportunity to take part in the story.

The project demonstrates how a simple display product can become an important part of an interactive visitor experience, while DZD’s bespoke sourcing service allowed the centre to secure the exact colours and quantity required within a particularly short timeframe.

After one year, the verdict is clear: the mystery of Loch Ness continues to capture the imagination, and Team Nessie is still leading the way.
