Consultancy & Design:
Working closely with Paul Symes and Sallie Smith we selected a range of illustrations to use for the display. Specifically a clock, a number of different birds, a crown and a present. We then created visualisations of the installation, which were refined and finalised.
Sourcing & Manufacture:
We wanted the 3D creations to mirror the original artwork which had the appearance of hand coloured engravings. Every element of this installation was made by hand. The enormous intricate clocks, with a motor to make the hands move, were gold leafed. Five different giant birds on gold perches were painstakingly hand painted and completed with painted and gilded decoration. The three monumental crowns were printed and hand coloured, the finishing touch was nearly 3,000 imitation jewels applied by hand. The acrylic presents had hand decorated ribbons.
Delivery & Installation:
Marc and Verity from DZD were on-site from 9pm on Halloween to receive the decorations and oversee the installation. Our trusty rigging team hauled each piece, one by one, up from the lower ground floor to the exact position we needed them and fixed them firmly in place. All around Fortnum's there were people dressing dozens of Christmas trees (in typical quirky Fortnum's style the trees featured DZD's owls in top hats, macaws with carnival masks and roosters in feathered hats), installing new chandeliers, and adding Christmas touches. At opening time it was looking absolutely fabulous.
In the early hours of Sunday morning all of the elements were in place; on Sunday evening we returned to add the final touch, strings of warm white lights which tied the whole thing together.
